Can Alice Save the Day?

Alice rode home in the carriage, trying to make sense of things.

Dr. Jekyll’s notes were a revelation, but Alice had no idea how to best use the startling information she’d received.

She also didn’t understand what happened with Henry. Obviously Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were the same person, which was a reveal surely no one could have ever seen coming.

“I saw it coming!” Harry McGlade yelled from the driver’s seat. “So did every single reader!”

“Harry, shush. I’m trying to think.”

“That’s adorable. Take care not to hurt yourself.”

Alice tried to ignore him.

Jekyll apparently drinks the potion to keep Hyde at bay. But why is Jekyll the only one who transformed into a giant sex-craved beast?

Everyone who has attended Carmen’s balls had consumed the golden shower elixir.

Are they all repressing their inner monsters?

Something isn’t adding up.

“How’s the thinking going?” Harry asked. “Did you injure your brain?”

“Why do you do so many cameos in stories, Harry? Is it because you can’t sustain a narrative all by yourself?”

“That’s hurtful. You’re supporting-character shaming me. I’m not talking to you for the rest of the ride.”

Thank goodness.

They arrived at Carmen’s house in blessed silence, and Alice went to her room and dressed for dinner.

During the meal, Alice remained too preoccupied to eat, and she just moved her meat around her plate with a fork. She and Carmen were alone at the table, the duchess’s husband having gone snipe hunting.

“Not hungry?” Carmen asked. “Or don’t like the raw calf’s brain?”

“Carmen, you know everyone loves raw calf’s brain,” Alice answered.

Carmen nodded. “I know. Especially my cousin, Hercule, who eats it for every meal, and who for some reason has chewed off his own lips and his fingers.”

“I’m sure there is no connection,” Alice said, absolutely sure there was a connection.

“So why are you moping?”

“Can I ask you a personal question?” Alice asked.

“Of course.”

“If you don’t drink the golden potion, does your body mass instantly double in size and you become a ravenous sex-beast?”

Carmen gagged, choking on her raw calf’s brains. “What? Of course not. That’s absurd. Alice, we’ve known each other for years, since before the golden shower potion had even been invented. Did I ever instantly double in size?”

“Not that I recall.”

“I mean I gain a few pounds of period bloat every menses, but that’s a far cry from doubling in size.”

“I’m not referring to that.”

“Do you mean the time that Arabian prince broke up with me? I know I spent a lot of time with Ben & Jerry, but I lost the weight within a few weeks.”

“I’m not talking about occasional weight gain, Carmen.”

“Are you talking about Salome, my conjoined twin? She couldn’t have weighed more than thirty pounds, and she only had a partial head and half an arm. Remember how she begged not to be detached from me? But what choice did I have? She absolutely ruined the lines of my bustle gown. Half an arm waving around, whining that she couldn’t breathe under all that fabric.
